A left wing policeman, if after arresting a thief, would say, 'Now you have been a naughty boy, don't do it again. Run along. A far left policeman may pay for his taxi to the airport, and hand him tickets to go on holiday, so he may see the error in his ways.

A right wing policeman would take him round a dark alley, and beat the crap out of him till he lay unconscious on the floor. A far right policeman may actually kill him.

Basically left is the soft option, right is the harder option. Normal thinking is usually about in the middle, a balance of both. Apply what I've said to politics, and all the various policies, agendas etc and it will make sense.

Left wing groups want change as rapid as possible in areas of diversity acceptance, environmental preservation, social programmes, etc.
Right wing groups, in the extreme are generally narrow and resist change, preferring to see us completely ruin the environment, starve the poor, and only give lip service to diversity issues.
<---My short version. Very short. I might add...
Right wing people think those on the left are complete nutters, Left Wing people think right wing types are BARKING MAD.
My Perception: There are nutters in both groups, but more in Right wing political circles.

Left wing groups are socialists and believe in communitarianism and the idea of all people as equals. Extreme Left wing groups believe in communism (read into Marx and Weber).

Liberals are somewhere in the middle

Right wing refers to more conservative people who believe in tradition, preservation of the way things are etc. Extreme right wing groups are usually termed nationalists and sometimes fascists. These are more seperatist and see other nations/ peoples or races us 'them' and all people the same to them 'us'

"Right" usually refers to people who want smaller government, lower taxes, etc.

"Left" usually refers to a preference for more social programs, like public education, unemployment, welfare, health care, etc, which generally comes with higher taxes.

They've been distorted somewhat to focus on social issues, with the right being conservative and the left being progressive.

Left are usually poor and believe in sharing the wealth.
Right are usually richer and believe in keeping the wealth.

Both sides tend to be out for themselves whilst dressing up their selfishness as principle.
