How can I find personal and business networking?

Unfortunately, many people feel uncomfortable in the networking process. They tend to feel unknown how to start, are too shy to attend events alone, don't feel comfortable starting a conversation and don't know how to maximize benefits of networking.

Recently, i've been using http://meetup.com to find business or entrepreneur related groups in my local area. I only went to one, but I managed to network with 2 people I intend to maintain a relationship with.

It sounds difficult, but when all of you are searching for business networking, it makes the process much easier.
