Book Recommendations?

I need new books to read. What are some good book titles (whether its fantasy,science, history, fiction, autobiographies,etc) you recommend?

Here are some that we've read in my book club that I've really liked:

anything by Jodi Picoult (most focus on ethical dilemmas in law and/or medicine) -- might start with My Sister's Keeper

anything by Anita Shreve, especially The Pilot's Wife, The Weight of Water, and The Last Time They Met (the last two are sort of connected, I'd read Weight first)

The Life of Pi (sort of a fantasy), by Yan Martel

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, by Mark Hadden

Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett

A Year of Wonders, by Geraldine Brooks (historical fiction, about the Plague) -- also look at her nonfiction work on the Middle East, Nine Parts of Desire

The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint, by Brady Udall

Stolen Lives, by Malika Oufkir (autobiographical)

almost anything by John Irving, especially A Prayer for Owen Meany

The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. There is the boxed set of 5 (paperback) you can get on Amazon for about 18 dollars. The Books include

The Giver by Lois Lowry, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt, No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith, Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. These are all books I've really enjoyed in the past few years.

Dresden file book series by Jim Butcher.There are 8 books in the series beginning with stormfront.It narrates the story of Harry Dresden,chicago's only professional wizard who works as a detective.He stands between the general population who is ignorant about the supernatural world and the monsters - vampires,werewolves,fallen angels,fey.He is aided by Bob,a talking skull.Karrin Murphy-a police officer and Thomas-a white court vampire.

Dragonjousters series(joust,alta,sanctuary,Aerie) by Mercedes Lackey.The setting is ancient Egypt.Hunger, anger, and hatred are constants for young Vetch, rendered a brutally mistreated and overworked serf by the Tian conquest of his homeland. But everything improves when a Tian jouster requisitions Vetch to become the first serf ever to be a dragon boy. His training is intense, and his duty clear-cut: to tend his jouster, Ari, and his dragon, Kashet. That is only the beginning.The rest of the books are about his escape to Alta,how the war between the two kingdoms is stopped etc.

Landslide by Desmond Bagley.Bob Boyd wakes up in a hospital with no memory,the only surviver of an accident.He was burned badly all over and needed extensive plastic surgery which was payed by a mysterious sponser.He is told that he's a geology student with a bad history.However Bob recovers and gets on with his life.Hired by the powerful Matterson Corporation to survey land before they build a great new dam, he begins to uncover the shaky foundations of the Matterson family and becomes a fly in their ointment.His accident and the Matterson family have more in common than he thought.

Count of Montecristo by Alexander Dumas.The hero is Edmond Dantés, a young French sailor who, falsely accused of treason, is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of Château d'If. After staging a dramatic escape he sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies. A novel of enormous tension and excitement, Monte Cristo is also a tale of obsession and revenge, with Dantés, believing himself to be an `Angel of Providence', pursuing his vengeance to the bitter end before realizing that he himself is a victim of fate.The author did a great job describing the emotions of the prisoner.Disbelief,denial,self pity,madness,apathy and finally hope.For God's sake don't see any of the movies based on the book.They don't do justice to the book.

well the classic books would be a good place to start if you've already read those then i would recommend going to a book store or library and asking the people who work there or just randomly getting a book off the shelf if that helps any

The Historian, they finally have it out in paperback! It's an awesome twist on the classic Dracula...very moving story.
Also The Time Traveller's Wife. Amazing plot, good writing.

I would read Marley and Me by John Grogan or East of Eden by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck who also wrote the classic Grapes of Wrath.
