Our experience is that they do deter them. However, be very careful how you use them as they are pretty caustic -- read all the warnings on the box. If you are trying to deter them in your house, the best we have found is a machine we found at Sam's some time ago which you plug in and it emits a sound they don't like. We use it in a vacation home when we are not there and have had success with it too. Believe it also has a setting for a sound we cannot hear so could be used while you are there.

No moth balls dont work for rodents. Only for moths.

Not sure but you need to be careful with moth balls, see what they are made of and whether or not they are poisonous. They also STINK really badly!

They are supposed to repel snakes and moths not sure about mice.

The only odor that I know that works is Pure Peppermint Oil. A little pricy but they hate it.

yes, they do. I have used them in my attic for years and had no problems with my mice since then. I also use them in my flower gardens to repel moles and chipmunks.
