In reference to the one answer, notebooks generally have "two" memory slots. One of the slots is sometimes hidden inside. One is referred to as the base memory slot while the other is the expansion memory slot. On some notebooks such as the Thinkpad T60, the base memory and expansion memory slots are located next to each other.

The most you can do with any notebook is upgrade both the base and expansion memory. Notebooks are designed to be mobile and not necessarily designed to be upgradeable or to replace the power of a Desktop.

Without knowing what your notebook model is I can't point you to the right hardware guide. Upgrading memory is generally different among notebooks.

Most notebooks generally have a panel on the bottom with a screw where you can upgrade the expansion memory or both the expansion and base memory. Except on the IBM T60 where the memory is underneath the palm rest.

Download, Belarc Adviser.........it will take an inventory of everything in the computer and the list will show how many memory slots you have and what is in them. My laptop has two slots and I have 512 mgs or Ram in each soon to be upgraded to 1 gig in each slot. I expect to get about 25% more speed out if the system with the doubling of the Ram.......I tend to keep my machine clean by cleaning out all unnecessary files at least once a week and I def-rag about once every two or three months.

Notebooks typically have one memory slot. To increase the total memory you'd have to remove the one that is there and put in a bigger one.
Many times the temp folders are full and need to be cleared out.
C:\temp and the TempInternetfiles folder under Local Settings.
After that, defrag.
