never been in that situation, but just in case maybe I would specially when it comes to my family's safety... yes, maybe I would just to protect them ;-)

Why tell someone something that would only hurt them to relieve my own guilt. It was selfish enough to commit the act/secret and would be extremely selfish to destroy someone elses life because of my own actions.
