Do I need to drain it before adding the conditioner?

No. Conditioner is added every so many days . It says on the bottle. It keeps mould down, and helps to keep the plastic flexible otherwise it will crack and leak in many places after many years and the "bag " is history.

Yep, good idea. That way, you will get rid of all the germs, algae, fungus and all that that has built up over the last time you used conditioner. And the conditioner that you add to clean water will do a much better job that adding it to water laden with bacteria and gunk. I have personal experience with this

no just add the conditioner in case the electric goes out and there is chance it might freezes keep a 5th of jin handy and add to the water it will keep it from freezing and busting.
