You can try Oxy-Clean. It removed some old stains from my mothers carpet. Pre -spray your carpet with it, a strong solution and let it set for about 30 minutes before you steam clean it. Also use it in with the carpet cleaning solution. Good luck

You will have to have the carpet professionally cleaned. It would even be better if the professional used a rotovac, looks like a small buffer, instead of the normal wand. This scrubs the carpet as it shoots down the solution and vacuums back up. If you rent a machine you could cause more problems. Also it would not get the carpet as clean as the landlord would like, and he would hire to have it cleaned and then charge you back for it. If you pay someone to clean it, they can not deduct carpet cleaning from your deposit. Be sure to save the receipt, could even turn in a copy of the receipt to your landlord when you do your walk through.

Don't waste the money to rent a carpet cleaner. All apartments/rental houses require that carpets be professionally cleaned, and they have someone come in to clean them...they get a discount and they take the cost of the carpet cleaning out of the deposit. If the carpet cannot come clean they will charge you for replacemement. If the carpet is more than 10 years old they cannot charge you.

Look into having a professional carpet cleaning establishment evaluate and treat the carpets. The machines that have the disc-like cleaning apparatus instead of the wand typically work much better.

Depends on how big an area you are talking about - if its a whole room hire a rigdoctor machine, it its just small areas use the Vanish Carpet Cleaner stuff and shampoo by hand.

You could hire a carpet-cleaner from the dry cleaners (Johnssons have them). I always use a damp sponge with some fairy liquid - works a treat!

I would rent a Rug Doctor...but if it's really bad, you may want to call in the professionals.

If a professional can't clean it, you might have to bleach the carpet or replace it.
