Since you have access to the web, I suggest you first do some research. For example, if Shop&Save has a website, go there, and see if they have a link for "corporate social responsibility" where they will list their initiatives for local charity.

If you can't find the website, or don't see the information, just go in and ask for the manager, and speak with them about your organization, and what you need. Be prepared with any documentation you have about your organization, and proof of nonprofit status.

Some companies will require a proposal and you will need to submit necessary paperwork. Other places may already donate food or other items to larger charities, and have them redistribute to the smaller ones.

As an illustration, I did a quick search under Krogers. This is what they say: http://www.kroger.com/faqs_companyinfo.htm

Will you donate to my non-profit organization?

You're Welcome to inquire at your local store for smaller requests.

For grant-type requests, The Kroger Co. operates three foundations. For information about charitable giving, please contact the appropriate retail division in your area.

The Kroger Co. Foundation grants must be reviewed and recommended by a local division.

The Fred Meyer Foundation makes grants in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation makes grants in California.

keep in mind that the companies motives are profits so if you want to get something out of them, shoot for the highest person in charge (because they have the ability to make a decision to help you) and ask and be humble, and somewhere in your proposal mention that this is for a good cause and your company will be recognized for it. Companies want to be seen as helping the community.

See if you can figure out a way where they dont lose money by helping you.

They have been aprroached a dozen times before, so keep that in mind too.
