It is because each transponder ( or mobile phone mast ) services a small area. Thus the country is split up into a collection of these areas or cells. As you move around, you phone automatically connects to the transponder with the strongest signal. In some areas the signal is blocked by buildings etc and so you can't use your phone mobile phones were originally called cellular phones and the Americans have stuck with the abbreviaton cell phones

If you are on an O2, Vodafone or Orange contract there is a loophole allowing a third party number to give you international calls using your inclusive minutes.

Check out http://www.loiol.co.uk/freephonecalls/home.do

Also most networks have a cheap international call package that can be added on to your contract or as a bolt-on on pay-as-you-go. For example, Network 3 has an international saver that costs £15 extra per month but allows you 3000 minutes to call abroad.

Have you considered using a landline? It can be much cheaper using the just dial service ...... It's about 3p per minute on your landline.

Hope that helps

press the star button twice so that a plus sign appears, then dial a 1, followed by the number.

sometimes if there is a zero as the first digit, you need to not dial the 0

Assuming your provider hasn't barred international calling, prefix with 001 and ignore the first zero.
