Why do some p[eople say Ron Guidry Is one of the best pitchers of all time? Hes good , Im a Yankee Fan so dont be so quick to judge. But Ron Guidry had a whole carrer of high 3 eras and 16 15 14 13 win seasons. Other than his 25-3 season and his other 20 win season, take the 25-3 season away and he wouldnt even be on Yankee-o-groaphy.

Your'e right, he's not high on my list of all-time great pitchers.
Longevity, Health , Durability , and Smarts were his key to success, and he rode them for all they were worth!
And plus, he was a classy guy , never heard a bad word spoke about him. Classy players always seem better than they actually were , especially if they "stayed classy" their whole career .
I think he was lucky to have played in a era of baseball before the current offensive explosion of 'roids' juiced balls , and smaller parks. But i'm a Mets fan, so i've been watching the guys on the other side of town! 25-3 with a 1.73 ERA, one fantastic season indeed, early in his career, bought him a spot in the rotation for a decade, and anyone pitching that long for the Yanks is bound to rack up some numbers!

Until he hurt his arm there was nobody that could touch him in his generation or since. Guidry put up Koufax and Gibson numbers against monster lineups in the ultra heavy AL East against teams using the DH and on a mound lower than the classic greats threw off of. There have been some pitchers to have years akin but not a wave of them like Guidry. Welch and Stewart had some great years but not one after another like Guidry. Take Guidry's stats before he hurt his arm and think about another 5 or 6 years of that before age started to take a couple MPH off his fast ball.
I've been watching baseball for over 30 years and Guidry is easily the best I've seen in my lifetime. That includes many current and future Hall of famers like Nolan Ryan, Carleton, Seaver, Clemens, Randy Johnson, Catfish Hunter, etc. It's a real shame he didn't get a few more years in before hurting his arm.
Also unlike any other pitcher other than Tommy John Guidry actually learned how to be a good pitcher despite throwing his arm out. That makes him all the more amazing. He was looking like a guy who could pitch to 40 with the sheer junk he was throwing. His fastball was gone after the injury. Still injury struck again and ended his career shortly after he got the hang of being a junk ball pitcher. He overcame a career ending injury only to be struck down a second time with a career ending injury.

He had one of the best seasons a pitcher could have when he went 25-3. He had a career ERA of 3.29. He was a good pitcher but wasn't consistent enough. He holds the Yankee record for strikeouts with 248. However, had he been more consistent, and won 300+ games in his career, everyone would think differently about him.

It is because of that 1978 season is why Guidry is so highly regarded. Maybe he isn't the greatest to those outside of the Yankee fanbase, but to the Yankee fans, he's one of the Very best. It was he emergence as a dominating pitcher that enabled NY to capture another World Series title. His 1978 records is one of the best seasons ever for a pitcher. His slider helped him to go 25-3 and win the Cy Young Award. His ERA for that year was 1.74 and he recorded 248 strikeouts. On June 17th of that year, he struck out 18 batters! Oh and I failed to mention, in 1978, he recorded 9 shutouts as well. That's why, he's one of my all time favorites.

He had one of the greatest pitching seasons of all-time and more than likey the greatest pitching season in Yankee history.
He also had records of 21-9 and 22-6 which you left out. His life time era was 3.29.
Ron was better than you think. Good but not the greatest.
