Why can't I put songs on my Ipod Shuffle?

Ok I just got this Ipod and I intalled Quicktime and Itunes -both the latest version and When i connect my Ipod to the USB Port the light is continuously blinking amber. No matter how long I leave it it still blinks amber. It will not turn green. I tried connecting it to other ports but it still either does nothing or stays a solid or blinking amber.
My other question is how can I get songs onto it? Is that what autofill is? I need to be explained in steps because the user's guide tells me how to connect it but not to actually get songs onto the Ipod.

Is this on a PC or a Mac? Go to the Apple site, click the Support button, click on iPod. There's a list of FAQ and you may be able to troubleshoot that way.
