He was modeled after Marvin Gaye. In the movie, Jimmy was put in to show how both groups, The Dreams and The Supremes, both started out as backup singers. Hope this helps.

At first I thought it was Smokey Robinson but later I thought maybe Marvin Gaye, but now I think it was supposed to be a mix of them all cause I read about the Supremes beginnings it never mentions them doing back up for anyone.

I'm not sure he is one particular person but I think he is a little James Brown, Chuck Berry and maybe Jackie Wilson mixed in.
