The computer has a special solid state IC. This is called the BIOS (Binary Input Output System). The Integrated Circuit (IC) has a program on it that tells the computer how to start and also runs a few tests when you turn the computer on. In addition, the computer has a BIOS clock. The battery allows the computer to retain BIOS settings and the time when the computer is unplugged.
