America is mostly free. I stress mostly, well maybe it should be somewhat, but it certainly isn't absolutely free. There is a religious dominance, but that comes from the principles on which the country was founded. Christianity led the way, and it still dominates today because (1) the majority of the population falls within that faith and (2) tradition. I think America is trying to be more free with regards to race, but this takes time. It's not just the government it's the members of society who continue to make race an issue. And sexuality, is becoming less free. The gay-marriage debate certainly doesn't make you think of "land of the free", does it? That is ridiculous, but since it's a more modern issue/problem, then I'm sure that just as with race/segregation, it will take some time to mellow out. I agree that some freedoms aren't readily available, but for the most part we enjoy multitudes of freedom that other countries don't.

I don't think America is free because its people are only told what the government wants them to know. I think many Americans are ignorant about the outside world because they believe the propaganda they are told by the government.
For example, a lot of people on Yahoo answers think all non americans are jealous of the US. This is just not true and any resentment towards Americans is as a result of this stupid mentality.
I agree with the non smoking thing in public areas, as a non smoker I hate breathing second hand smoke from other people.

No america is not a free country. The declaration of independence means nothing, the christian religion is in danger of ennilation, the close family is being destroyed, your forced to fight wars you dont belive in, the cia, fbi, and all those other people that we are not allowed to speak of can do what they want to you and get away with it, the gestapo police force that is prejudice will kill you and put you a innocent as being as guilty as hitler. Should i go on.

Only if you are a politician. Then, you are free to do what YOU want and hell with the rest of America. If you are not a politician, then many of your rights are taken away. Thank your government/politicians. If it is a free country, free to do what??? Swim nude? To be able to sing Christmas songs in school, prayer in school? To be able to smoke pot if you have cancer? To be able to decide for yourself if you want to wear a seatbelt or not when driving?
