Like if a mixed girl (black/white) married a white guy, would her child be white? You know.... they say one drop of black blood and youre black?

The child would probably be lighter from what I've seen. But anyway....

Black Blood and White Blood? don't worry about it love!

Just love the child. If you're American I understand you'll be caught up in inevitable Racism, but do you really give a s*it what it looks like?

And the ppl who say one drop of black blood and your black need to understand THEY THEMSELVES have black blood in them regardless. All men come from Africa in seperate waves in fact! The first few FAILED to stick around, and the ones who succeeded to become who we ALL are today, where the ones who stayed behind. Modern Africans!

Just love the baby!

Thats is a really good question. Technically the child is still of mixed blood. As the mother is of mixed blood. If you mean will the child look white or black then it is possible. The child will tend to be of the predominate color but again that is the determination of the carrying gene. The child will probably by your example be white by definition of color. But there is also the off chance that a recessive gene could make the child black in color. the percentages fall towards white in color though.
Just to site an example my wife and myself are of dark colored hair. This has been the dominate trait for several generations back. But our daughter is blonde with blue eyes. Somewhere in the family line there was a recessive gene that did this. But basically it really falls on the gene percentages.

I am amazed that so many people are providing off the cuff answers when the answer is sitting on this very medium of exchange (the internet).

The question you posed seems to be more geared towards trying to find out strictly based on appearance what the childs skin tone may be. That said, I will not address the perception of ethnicity that people in the society such a child is raised in would have. (This is the can of worms)

Luckily the genetic science is quite clear for the problem you stated.

If a mixed child (assuming pure African Mother + Pure European Father..though the order doesn't matter) were to have a child with a European of the opposite sex. The contributions are determined by the chromosomes.

If the mixed child is a male their chromosomes are as follows:

Xagm from Mother + Yegf from Father = XagmYegf male
Xagf from Mother + Yegf from Father = XagfYegf male

if female:

Xagm from Mother + Xegm from Father = XagmXegm female
Xagf from Mother + Xegf from Father = XagfXegf female

a = african
e = european
gm = grandmother
gf = grandfather

Note in both cases there are two families of combinations possible. The determinant of sex can come from either the direct (matching sex of parent) line or an indirect line (as inherited from a grand parent) for both males and females.

In every case however, each parent contributes an ethnic component to each combination. So, the child will end up carrying 50/50 XX (female) or XY (male) chromosomes with different ethnic components to them European/African.

Now, enters the European mate, he contributes XegmYegf which are both European. We shall call it simply Xe2Ye2 since this is the second European set of chromosomes discussed thus far.

How is their offspring likely to appear? Since you asked about the mixed female case as an example we'll use that one, from the two types of female mixed offspring possible we have:

XagmXegm female
XagfXegf female

the offspring can be:

Xagm + Xe2 = XagmXe2 = (ae) mixed skin female.
Xegm + Xe2 = XegmXe2 = (ee) 100% european skin female.
Xagf + Xe2 = XagfXe2 = (ae) mixed skin female.
Xegf + Xe2 = XegfXe2 = (ee) 100% european skin female.

If you assume the child is a male the same percentage results. Namely 50% chance the child is all european and 50% chance it is mixed skin tone. This hilights the mendellian aspect of chromosome contributions from different parents. Note I only refer to the skin tone of the child, other attributes commonly used to determine "ethnicity" just as hair texture, eye shape, lip shape are all determined in complex ways that are not Mendellian in nature. This is why these attributes always take on varied forms in "mixed" individuals. However clearly in your given example it's possible to give birth to *non mixed* off spring since one of the parents (the female) have a copy of only one ancestral line.

to the first guy who answered this. It depends on what country your speaking about ...but I know that their are many people who determine if a person is white or black only by the color of their skin . I have seen family members /siblings coming out looking one race the other the other ...it does not matter its the genes .Many people who walk around saying their white are mixed ...others who walk around bias and saying their black are mixed. People have mixed long before America begun ...

I don't know, I think it would depend on the dominant genes involved. I would say since most of the genes that give 'white' features such as colored eyes and blond hair are recessive, the child would most likely carry the overt attributes of their parent that is a person of color. However, as far as bone structure, height, etc. Who knows?

For some reason, most mixed kids of any ethnicity seem to be pretty good looking, from what I've seen. Who knows why, really?

It's soooooooo unpredictable. No one can tell for sure which gene will predomiate. Even with a couple that are both white. There could be a recessive gene from a couple of generations ago, in which the child has red hair, and both parents have black hair. It's very complex, but, it's come a long way. ~~~~

WELL IF THE CHILD IS MALOTTO AND SHE MARRIES A WHITE MAN THE CHILD WILL HAVE A QUARTER BLACK BLOOD IN HER AND AS THE SAYING GOES YOU ARE WHAT YOUR FATHER IS.tHE CHILD WILL BE PREDOMINATELY WHITE. BUT THE BLACK RACE WILL ALWAYS CONSIDER THE CHILD BLACK.

depends how the genes fall in place. Baby can come out looking white, black or a mix. Most likely baby will come out looking white with darker features. I bet they'd be good looking though

well that person will always be mixed. even in alter generations when they are only 1/8 or another small fraction.

black is more dominant in genes than white, but sometimes weird things happen.
my parents were both white but my father has brown eyes and my mother and I have blue- even though blue is recessive

the government would consider them white, i am black and i look mixed, my parents are dark, to me if u are mostly white then u are white, if u are mostly black then u are black, thats like me trying to claim white because i have it in me, why is it they wanna push anyone with a drop of black off in our race. i mean if your great great great granddaddy was black then that makes u black how gay is that, i mean at the point they most likely look white look at nicole richie her real dad is black and sh looks like a tanned white girl
