Store bought floppy disks come pre-formatted from the manufacture but do not always work straight out of the box. To remedy this you need to format the disk in your floppy drive.
To format your disk (in Windows XP), open My Computer and right click on the A: drive. A small dialog box will pop up with the option to format. When you select the option the format program will start. Click the Start button to execute the format.
When completed try saving your documents to the floppy disk. If the files are larger than 1.44 MB you will need to look for other options for saving your files. A great alternative to floppies are USB flash drives, which hold many times the capacity of a floppy and most computers today have USB capabilities.

This is a common problem in older systems, what happens is the drive is unused, or just dirty, maybe both. that's why it fails during a write operation. the solution is simple, but a bit of hassle.
before you need the disk to save a file, just format it with your system. that will tell you two things 1.) the system can work the drive. 2.) the media is good.
if that fails (format) it may mean the drive is faulty (dirty ?), or the system driver for the floppy has failed in someway.
if it works, just get a drive cleaner kit to keep it working.

You should be able to put them in your computer. Select my computer icon on your desk top, then right mouse click on the disk drive that has the floppy and select format. After this is complete then go ahead and save.

back in the days, "floppy" disks really were floppy... The large 5 1/4" disks were bendy enough that you could almost fold it in half! The name just stuck with the next generation of disks, the 3 1/2" ones, as they did the same job...
