The University of Oklahoma is the same way (OU). I thought it would be the other way around (UK, UO).

It does not seem to be known why the University of Kansas is abbreviated KU, but it has been referred to as such since the late 19th century. The name of the university as written in Latin on the seal is an explanation offered, but there is no agreement; see the source below for information.

Because UK is the university of Kentucky. The universities do that to keep confusion down about which college is being referred to. I think the colleges get to chose based on which one was founded first.

because UK is the University of Kentucky. USC is Souther Cal, but could also be University of South Carolina. ESPN shortens this to SoCar.

well it isn't always in order cuss university of kansas can be called kansas university ... "ku"
