Going to Austria, Italy and Switzerland, and I hear that ATMs are the best way to get local currency -- what US ATM cards can I use over there?

If you have a visa card, you can use it in any ATM that displays the visa symbol. Atleast that's what i've found, using my own visa card in Europe, the US, aswell as here at home in the UK. Charges vary depending on the exchange rate and individual bank charges.
Hope that helps.

The following cards work with almost all ATM machines in these countries:

Visa
MasterCard
American Express
Cirrus

It is not necessary that you look for an American bank. You can easily use the ATMs of the local ones.

Enjoy your trip.
