This generation is a pain in the behind. The passenger side is pretty easy. You just remove the headlight plug and then the rubber housing. This will expose the clip holding the bulb in place.
Push the clip in and it should lift up for you to remove the bulb. Clean your new bulb and just do the reverse.
The drivers side...that's a pain. I have changed bulbs without removing the power steering reservoir which sits directly in front of the house. If you have small hands, it's easier to grab, but if not, you'll have to twist and turn your hand a bit. It does come out.
If all else fails, the dealer will pop it out for a few bucks.

First sounds like you alternator is gone but the way to check is turn your car on then take the negative cable off the battery if it stays on the alternator is fine if the car shuts of get a new one next it sounds like you hooked it up correct its good to sand down any paint around the ground but if the amp is on it is not a problem your getting a good ground. I reccomend a new alternator and a capacitor which is to help take some strain of you alternator just think of it as a smalll battery that help push those subs and also look into a yellow top Optima battery there made for electronics in cars and have the power of 2 regular batteries. Don't listen to your friend sounds like he was messed up you could burn your whole electrical system up.

the first thing you need to do is remove the front bumper off the car...this would make it easier to take the headlight out...then just disconnect the headlight and then pull it out..
