A case study means focusing in on one particular part or group of gang violence. For example--find some information on one particular gang like the well known crypts or bloods. Then, find some statistics on how many are teenagers and the violent acts the gang perpetrated. Hope this helps.

Check out a book called Freakonomics by an economics professor/statistician. In one section of the book the author had a partner that infiltrated a gang that distributed crack cocaine. They actually got access to the gangs 'books' and attempt to do a somewhat academeic breakdown of the gangs activity; it was a very interesting read and a short chapter if I remeber right. There are some humorous examples where the gangs language is kinda 'translated' into academic and business speak.
