I think if you're a fan of the book, then it's the remake that's better, hands down...

I understand why people like the Kubrick version, but I personally was very frustrated when it came out because it bore very little resemblance to the original story.

It may be great in its own way, but I could never get what it COULD have been (and eventually WAS in the remake) out of my head - which is probably why I prefer the remake. I also thought that Nicholson's overacting was atrocious, but I'm very much aware I'm in the minority on that opinion.

Stephen King DID NOT remake 'The Shining'. He liked the remake better than Kubrick's but he did NOT direct it or produce it or star in it. I believe he wrote the screenplay based on his novel but someone else may have wrote the screenplay based on King's novel. Why does everyone on here think Stephen King remade 'The Shining' when he did NOT. The only movie he ever directed was the fantastic 'Maximum Overdrive' based on his story 'Trucks'. 'Trucks' was made into a tv movie, just like 'The Shining' was.

I'm a major fan of the original novel, and while Kubrick's film is striking, it has little to do with the spirit of the book, or with King's themes. The teleseries stayed true to the characters and events of the book, was warmer and more sympathetic to its protagonists and was better-acted.
The teleseries gets my vote without doubts.

Kubrick's. While it strayed from the book quite a bit, Kubrick's unique vision made this into one of the greatest horror films of all time.
