For three of the colleges that I am applying to, the essay question that I want to answer states, "Choose a favorite film, novel, musical piece, work of art, etc and why it has special importance to you?" Tell me about something that is popular & that can be easily related to developing someone's life. Thanks a bunch!

My advice is not to take something popular. Popular music, for example, is mostly crap -- and choosing it would show your plebian tastes. The same goes for literature -- choosing Stephen King would show that you like schlocky books that don't make you think.

Why not take a few minutes and write down some serious books or movies that you have liked and then write something about it that made you like it.

The following link lists the 250 highest rated movies in the Internet Movie Data Base. Go through the list and see if there is anything you loved. If not -- rent some DVDs.

Don't pick something like Star Wars -- take something serious -- like Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, or (as someone else said) To Kill A Mockingbird. These movies all have historical significance.

If you really know how to write, and want something more offbeat - then Pulp Fiction, The Usual Suspects, The Professional (AKA Leon), or Blade Runner could be good choices. For these, you really have to convince them that they were important to you.

1. If you could be a specific piece of art (whether painting or sculpture or what have you) what would you be? And/or who would you pick to be your artist? The Scream, definitely. I remember the first time I saw it (in an episode of Rosanne), and I automatically fell in love with it. I bought a copy on ebay right away. I really feel like it represents a lot of the things my mind has been going through for the last few years =] 2. If you could be a piece of literature (whether poem or novel or what have you) which would you be? And/or who would you pick to be your writer? I'd want Megan McCafferty to write me. That way my life would seem to be much more interesting and hilarious than it actually is. Lord, that woman makes me laugh! 3. If you could be a song which would you be? And/or who would you pick to sing you? Ooh! Definitely Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Or possibly Come Together by the Beatles. 4. If you could be an instrument which would you be? I'd be a violin. I love how passionate it sounds. I really wish I came off as that passionate. 5. If you could be a movie which would you be? And/or which actor would you pick to be with you? I'd probably be Donnie Darko =] Give me some Johnny Depp, and I'm in heaven.

Like the other person said, they want a well-written essay. If you write about To Kill a Mockingbird, that's great, but you'll put the person reading it to sleep because s/he has read that essay 2,000 times. Just choose works that are relevant to you so that you can be honest and explain your ideas clearly. They are looking for original answers, believe it or not, and surely you've seen a film or read a book that you loved. Explain why you loved it. Easy-peasy.

It doesn't have to necessarily deal with developing your life. You could choose something in which you relate to the characters or the subject matter. For example, you might say that you liked a certain movie because the characters had great costumes, and costuming is one of your interests. I would say that most colleges are looking for a well-written essay. They don't necessarily mean you to choose particularly "deep" or "classic" things. Choose something that you can relate to, and then tell how you relate to it.
