Thanks for your responses so far.
Additional info - I am in the UK so need recommendations from people on this side of the pond. Obviously some AOL users are in the states etc.

Decide what speed and a download limit you want then shop around. find out what speed you can get off the BT website - don't pay for something you can't get!!
Tiscali are good value. they do get busy at certain times though and you struggle to get a connection. everyone i spoke to was in England.
If you want a service without a contract try virgin.
be careful if you decide to use BT their cheapest package has an 18 month contract.

I dont know why everybody cries about aol, i have been with them for a year and have never had any bother with with my broadband at all, i like the way thier email works and they have plenty of chat rooms, to make things even better they have just agreed to reduce my monthly bill by nearly half (way to go aol) I have nothing bad to say about them and the staff are very helpfull. i would recommend them

anyone but tiscali! while we were waiting for our broadband modem, we were on dial up and were told that tiscali would be charging us, a few weeks later we got a bill from bt for £140! all except £3.00 of it was for the internet! tiscali denied that they ever said they'd be charging us, not bt (basically saying we were making it up!) also, about 10 times in the 2 or 3 weeks we had dial up we had to call tiscali because the connection kept going down. Then when we got the modem, the broadband wouldnt work, so had to call again (by the way, all their call centres are in india) a number of times, it was only a few weeks later when they admitted that it was their fault because in our area you can only get 1mb broadband, but they had given us a 2mb connection. then to top it off, they still charged us for the 2-3 weeks that we didnt have any internet connection, even though it was their fault! so anyone except TISCALI!!!!!!!!!

Try Namesco, I started off with NDO and moved to Namesco when NDO got bought out by them. I could go cheaper but have to be honest my broadband has never been off in three years (That I know of.) The customer service is excellent and their website / control panel easy to use.
You can compare ISP's at www.adslguide.org.
Hope this helps.

You could try " NTL" I have 2mb Broadband + Telephone and the cost is between £25.00 to £28.00 per month and has never let me down. I even get the offer to have digital television for an extra £2.00 per month.
but whatever you decide on, do not go with A.O.L for you will have a job in cancelling your account if you are not happy with their service. good luck with your search.

We use www.demon.co.uk, fast quick to respond to phone calls. Set up pretty quick. Once set up no need to call again. We've been with them a couple of years now. Good value.
