Using headphone socket on music centre to line input on laptop.

You've got a horrible impedance mismatch coupled with the fact your hifi will probably take a dim view of having no load on its output. Best solution is to take the output from the hifi's aux out, if it has one, to the PC aux input. Failing that and you absolutely have to use the headphone output on the hifi then you need a couple of 33ohm 1watt resistors (less than 50p from Maplin). One connected between Left and earth/ground and the other between Right and ground, then use the PC microphone in jack rather than the aux in.

Connect your PC/Laptop outputs (phono)or mini jack to AUX (phono)Inputs on your
music centre, select AUX on the switch on the front of your system...........
If this continues to buzz... then you have a broken cable..
