The first major difference between dvds is DVD-R and DVD+R.

If you're going to be making dvd videos, I would suggest using DVD-R. DVD-R is more compatible with more DVD players. I wouldn't use DVD+R unless I was sure my DVD video player supported it. If you want to check to see what your DVD player(s) play, go to videohelp.com, and click "dvd players" on the left-hand side. Once that page comes up, search your dvd player make and model number, then scroll down to see if it supports DVD-R, DVD+R, or both.

If you're using the dvds to store computer data on, then you could go with either DVD-R or DVD+R.

I use my blank DVDs to backup video DVDs for the most part, so I use DVD-R always, so I don't have to worry about compatibility issues. Sometimes you can find DVD+R a little bit cheaper than DVD-R, but for me it's not really worth it.

The only other specifications on blank DVDs are the "write speed". The write speeds come in 1x, 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x and so on. The most common write speed is 8x. Just get an 8x pack. The 8x ones will also have support for 4x, which is good if you're making copies of movies, and the movies are skipping. (Set your burner to burn at 4x from then on, if that's the case.)
