As of right now, the USA. Political alliances are based on economic interests and are subject to very rapid change. Need I remind you that Iraq and Afghanistan were our allies in the 1980s. The UK and the US have formed some common economic interests and hold a tremendous amount of shares in our national stock. The other nations of Europe do to varying degrees, with France and Russia being notable exceptions of nations that were not so quick to disavow their economic interests with the Middle Eastern "bad guys." Some of it is ideological, but the ideology stems back to economics. France and the Soviet Union felt that it is better to work with Hussein and Iraq, even if it means potentially higher oil prices, because the outcome of invasion may be more devastating, and what economic interests they do have in Iraq they would risk losing. America was more confident in its ability to reshape the country into a cooperative ally. The outcome will not be decided anytime soon, but certainly anyone who thought that everything would fall into place within a few years of an invasion was out of their mind.
And I am an American.

I'm in America, and I think that Britain has closer ties with the U.S. This is seen as Britain is still in the war in Iraq even though almost the rest of Europe has dropped out. However, as the European Union strengthens, look for the Brits to protest to the government to form stronger bonds with Europe.

Britain has closer military ties with the USA as they control the British nuclear weapons and have their troops on British soil but economic and social ties are stronger with Europe. Many British people go to live in Europe each year and travel is much easier to Europe with none of the intrusive and offensive security that British people have to endure from US Customs and Immigration officials
