Corfu or Kerkyra is in the Ionian Sea, on the west side of the Greek peninsula. The Ionian Sea is the southern side of the Adriatic Sea which is between the Balkans and Italy.
Corfu is the northernmost Ionian Island save two tiny ones and was never occupied by the Turks, therefore has a distinct Italianesque feel to it, including its music, speech and architecture. A beautiful island indeed in the summer it is devastated by the throngs of tourists.
