As a New Zealander who has spend many holidays in the US, I can say that in general, people dislike US politics more than the people.

Also, there is a particular type of American tourist which does tend to stand out in a crowd, and for those from other countries who have not travelled themselves, those people define Americans.

People with travel and life experience know that particular group does not define all Americans, just as we all know that angry young men do not define all Muslims, Steve Irwin does not define all Australians, and the Royal Family does not define all English people.

I have to say that on my first trip to the US I was delighted to find how nice and polite and friendly Americans are, nothing like the brash loud arrogant tourist who features in the cartoons. I liked you!!

As for the question about why you are yet to see a hateful question about other nationalities...I'm not sure that's true, especially when you substitute the word 'religion' for 'nationality'.

Because some Americans say hurtful(and racist) comments to people in real life. What others may see as racist to their culture or religion, some Americans don't think it is. But what Americans see as racist, people from other religions think it's the truth. Everyone has their opinions, but I think that they should be said in a nice way. There's too much racism going on in America, especially after 9/11. I will admit, there are extremists who aren't exactly helping these problems, but the problems don't just start with them. None of this means that every American or all the people from a certain culture, ethnicity, background, or religion are bad. Some people just set bad examples. That is what the focus is usually on; the negative things. We should be worrying about global warming instead of pointing fingers and saying, 'It was their fault! No they started it!'

Hi, I'm English and I don't hate Americans!! But I agree with what someone said a little earlier, it probably does have something to do with Bush. He's the reason a lot of Brits don't like Blair either but to me he seems to be a nice guy... just a bit of a sheep. The English can be very fickle people if they don't like one person they tarnish the whole nation with the same brush! Brits also tend to follow the crowd... Doesn't make be proud to be English.

I am just as confused as you hon but there are a lot of people of other nationalities who are lovely and have beautiful manners as well...it's the ones who say awful things that tend to stick out...and I gotta say it is true of our side too we are not without stain on that one...
I must also add that the Englishman above me really helped to spell it out for me and gave me a better understanding...thank you! I love the English even tho some scruff us up now and then...LOL

I live in Australia and it's a bit typical of some people to hate Americans. It's probably beacuse they just like to hate America.
They just like to have a bit of fun. We Aussies don't call Americans Pig Crap either.

Some people that are not Americans, think that we are so bad, when we're not. They hate George Bush, so they think all Americans are like him, which isn't the case. In other words, we all get a bad reputation because of one man, that we don't even like ourselves.

Well to be honest, I'm American and have seen first hand Americans can act stupid. Have you ever been to another country? If you have then you would see that people aren't as silly as here in our country. It's sad too. You don't see obese people running around, smelly people in PJs, and you don't see people using foul language or flying through traffic on cell phones causing accidents.
