1sq ft = 1ft x 1ft
1sq yd = 1yd x 1yd
Use conversion 1yd = 3 ft
1sq yd = 3ft x 3ft
= 9 sq ft
So to convert square feet into square yards, divide the number of square feet by 9.

Square feet is really feet*feet, right? And there are 3 feet per 1 yard, or 1 yard per 3 feet. So set it up as a multiplication of fractions:
x ft*ft * 1yd/3 ft * 1yd/3 ft =
The feet cancel, and the units left is sqare yards. Then you just do the math on the numbers.
This works for converting any units - length, mass, time, whatever. As long as you know the conversion factor (i.e. how many feet in a yard).

3 ft = 1 yd
squaring both sides
3 ft x 3 ft = 1 yd x 1 yd
9 ft^2 = 1 yd^2
Dividing both sides by 9
1 ft^2 = 1/9 yd^2
Ans: To get yd^2, divide ft^2 by 9

put 9ft over 1 /// multiply by
9 ft 1 yd
---- multiply --------
1 3 ft
if you do this correctly twice (becasue its sq) 1 yd sq
