If you opened a coffee shop than you would be the owner.

There's a lot to think about. You have to consider the costs of doing business vs. the revenue you'll make. Costs include:

Rent
Utilities
Permits (City, Health Department)
Insurance
Inventory
Equipment
Maintenance

I'd research this a bit more and try to take a business class.

Starbucks does not put well-run coffee shops out of business, they merely accelerate the inevitable. If an independent business is serving an outstanding product and able to run their operations profitably, nearby chain shops tend to INCREASE, not decrease their business volume.

I've written about this in a recent blog article on the subject, here: http://www.coffeestrategies.com/2006/12/05/starbucks-put-me-out-of-business-and-other-scapegoats

Other articles regarding competition with chain shops are referenced in the source list, below.

For those starting a coffee shop, I've made my guide "12 Fundamentals of Coffee Business Success" available online for free, here.
