Classic.

No, we are not imprisoned by our government. It was built on the grounds to make sure that the people had a say. However, we are being oppressed by the politicians. Yes, there is a difference.

The Founding Fathers build this nation from the ground up and they did try as hard as they could to keep it free. After all, they fought over just about every little detail trying to make sure this was the right way.

We are free in a way. We can vote for who we want (no matter what you think, you won't die for voting unlike other countries), you can say what you want (once again, you won't die for saying what you want unless it's there's a crazy person after you), and you can do what you want in your private space (you could be into S&M for all the government cares as long as you do it in the privacy of your own home). There are dozens of laws protecting the privacy of Americans; look at the Bill of Rights, for one. The Fourteenth Amendment, etc.

However, I am also far from a supporter of our government. I've done my share of America-hating. It does seem that we are imprisoned by our society, by greedy tyrants, and by stupid decisions. It does seem as if we are slaves to gas prices, governors, the school board, and our jobs.

But at least we have the ability to vote for those tyrants and those who make stupid decisions. We are all part of society. It is our choice to use gas powered cars and work our monotonous jobs.

Compare ourselves to other countries. We could be living in poverty, paying tribute to the king (yes we have taxes, but it doesn't take away all we have), working with a trigger at our temples. No matter what you think, you can't say that the United States' government, though overbearing, is as bad as in other places.

Always look at the other side of the coin. Yes, popular culture teaches us that we are in fact not free because of certain recent happenings. But take any basic government class and you will realize what the Founding Fathers and the Supreme Court go through to try to ensure us our freedom.

We are not imprisoned by our Government....Yet. Right now laws are being passed that build the framework for us to be thrust into a complete dictatorship.
The so-called "Patriot Act" destroyed a good amount of the Bill of Rights. The Military Commissions Act of 2006 destroys haebus corpus. GWB's 750 illegal signing statements, including one that authorizes torture in violation of the Constitution, the Geneva Convention, and several other laws nationally and internationally. The illegal, and admitted mass surviellance of phone calls and records, library records,...even a law that says the President can order martial law for an undefined reason and Congress can't intervene for 6 months.
If the question was "Are we free?", then I would say hell no. But being imprisoned, although it is in our future, I say no, we are not imprisoned.

Hmm. Perhaps not all of us are taking advantage of this freedom. But then again can we? What with money and capitalism driving many political decisions made in government. I get your point. This so-called democracy doesn't always serve everyone, only the majority, except these days, with the two-party system not helping at all, the majority usually wins over the rest by a small margin. So yeah, in many ways this freedom hasn't served all, has indeed imprisoned many.

We as a people do sort of sit around and hope for change, but until we realize that as people in our situation, the only way change will come is if we make a stand. But then again, we'd just be jailed wouldn't be. But you have to admit, we did let it get out of hand, sitting by all these years... Ineveitably the "free" people of this country weren't always free, and they probably won't' be in the next thousand years, if humans are still around by that time..

Yes, I believe we are being imprisoned by all the people who are in positions of authority who want to leave there mark on society by passing laws, amendment to laws and more laws. They do not care if it might be good or bad they lack integrity and dignity. It is all about them and there name. They are already getting the money but want more if they can get it from leaving some stupid lasting impression. That is my thoughts and answer to your question and I would hope you will agree! Thank you for asking!
