Your ideas are still growing, you're still learning new things and finding out who you are and he's already been there and done that. I know, I was with someone a lot older than me and we grew a part and he started driving me crazy wanting to know everything little thing I did every day, not one minute of the day was mine and I couldn't stand it, it was like living with my mother all over again. We had two great years but had three years of hell trying to get out of it. Don't go down that road, it's not worth it. There's a great guy out there for you closer to your age. Just tell grandpa bye-bye.

It's maybe not wrong, it's just not right. You are much too young to be with a man so much older than you. At your age, you should be doing all of the fun things that teens do. And a normal 40 year old man shouldn't enjoy those same things. If you are so in love, wait for 10 years and see if you still love him. Then I say that the age difference is no big deal.

It's very easy to fall in love and we don't have much control over the process. However, sometimes it's best to just bite the bullet and go through the withdrawal pains. The earlier you start the process the easier it is.
I'm not saying that it is impossible for such a relationship to work, but it is unlikely and would be fraught with difficulties. It's up to you in the long run, but remember that no matter how impossible it seems now, you can get over him and feel the same way about another some day.

It IS crazy, but it CAN happen. I fell in love with a man 30 yrs older than me and it worked out fine. I Was 17 at the time too. Sad to say, he is no longer with us. Died of liver cancer at age 53. Best of LUCK to you.
Just be sure the guy isn't using you. Older guys can and will take advantage if you aren't careful. A guy at ANY age will if you're not careful.

let it go...the age difference is too great for much worthwhile to occur...there's too much chance if he dated you (once you were of legal age) that it would be him going through mid-life crisis wanting to show that young women still find him appealing, and for you it would be kind of a "daddy" thing...someone to take care of you, support you, tell you what to think and how to feel...you're still a kid, not quite a young adult...he's a middle aged man...what do you have in common?

I don't really know what a 40 year old and a 17 year old could possibly have in common. Please think about this tho.....when you are 26, he will be pushing 50. That's just not right! You'd probably be happier with someone young like yourself. (more fun)
