What I don't like about it is it implies he doesn't want her to improve herself or do what makes her happy, she has to stay just the way her likes her, for him to love her. The particular lyrics I don't like are:

'You never let me down before'
(but I will be monitoring you now, don't let down in future!)

'I'll take you just the way you are'
('just')

'Don't go trying some new fashion'
(don't do what you want to do, ie very controlling)

'Don't change the color of your hair'
(again, you must stay the way I like you to be)

'I don't want clever conversation'
(you're just a pretty face without a brain, that's fine, you should just stay in the background like a good wife and merely exist to make me feel good)

'I never want to work that hard'
(I don't plan to make any effort for you)

'I just want someone that I can talk to'
(I want someone to talk at more like it)

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
(Don't change or else!)

Downunder I think you lack imagination. Are you always this much fun?

I'm with you on that. If a bloke said he liked me because i didn't make clever conversation I'd tell him where to get off or he'd be on for a jolly good slap. Thinking of it, Christine Brinkley isn't with Mr Joel anymore. Maybe she listened to the lyrics after all and pegged it....

I think that one really is a sweet love song - you really should not have to change who you are to have someone love you. I love Billy's songs, but the one song that is touted as a "love" song but I don't think really is (or is in a warped way) is "She's Always A Woman." Links to both sets of lyrics are below.

i don't know the song well enough to know which lyrics u find insulting, but the song that i never could understand is 'every breath u take' by The Police. people seem to think that it's this amazing love song, when in fact it's actually a song he wrote about stalking his ex. i just find it a little sinister.........

OF COURSE NOT!!!! he was trying to be a gentleman by saying that this girl was perfect just the way she was, (even though the woman he wrote it for was not very attractive) and that she did not need to change herself to make him happy. he's basically saying he wouldn't want her to go through a lot of trouble to please him.

No, if you listen to the lyrics properly he is actually saying you are perfect, just the way you are, he does not want you to try to be something superficial or false, hence thr line dont go changing to try to please me, I love YOU just the way you are.

Not really, though he wrote it for his first ex-wife, a fact he contemptably acknowledged when I saw him in concert. After the song was done, Elton announced he was playing one "I can't remember if I wrote this one for my ex-wife or my ex-husband."

not sure where the insulting part comes in. my impression of the song is: you don't need to go out of your way to try and impress me, I'm already impressed and I appreciate who you are.

Wow, I knew I wasn't the only one who saw the song in that light. Is he kinda connoting that to other people, she might not be that appealing, but to him she is perfect? Quite insulting isn't it?
