refs are always biased...but not just to the more popular team, sometimes they dont like a coach so they are baised against him, or they have a problem with a player, etc.

in the nba especially officials seem to favor the star players
Referees in the nfl and mlb are much fairer

Of course they can be biased. They are biased in high school sports, college sports, and most definitely pro sports. Money talks...
