Kind of a complicated scenario so bear with me.

I am taking anti bitotics for a throat infection. Last night my daughter (13 months) opened her bowels in the night and now she has rather violent nappy rash. Its not the first time she has pooed in the night, but its the first time she has got nappy rash as a result.

I read on some website that if a baby is on antibiotics it can contribute to nappy rash, because the antibiotics kill off the bacteria that usually prevent it. I suspect she may have got some of my antibiotics through my breast milk. Is this at all possible?

Dominatrix, in the UK nappy = diaper.

Nurse A or anyone, I have something called Kamillosan in my cupboard. Is that any good? I have never used anything on her bottom because she has only had nappy rash once before, so she doesnt usually need it. I am currently letting her air out her bottom, but when she sleeps again soon, should I put some Kamillosan or the barrier cream? I have the cream that comes in the grey tub with the red writing, I think it begins with S, not sure though.

as far as i am aware i dont have a yeast infection, i have never had one either. I think this is probably cos I take long baths instead of showers. I read somewhere that this helps prevent thrush.

Yes, it is possible.
Just give nappy-free time and don't use baby wipes, use cotton wool and water instead, since baby wipes irritate and sting the skin :)

Don't stress about it though, you need to get yourself better :)

EDIT:
I just tried to email you, but your address wasn't confirmed, so this is what I wrote :

Grey tub, red writing.

That is Sudocrem, but honestly, it isn't as good as it is cracked up to be, everyone raves about it, but it has done nothing to heal my daughter's rash.

You won't hurt your daughter by using Kamillosan, the best thing is the fresh air treatment, but obviously that's no good at night, so use whatever you have to help your baby's skin heal. You could always go to your doctors in the morning to see what they recommend :)

Hope you didn't mind me writing to you

I don't know if you're already doing it but use water and cotton wool to change her bottom rather than baby wipes. Sudocreme I've found works better than anything else so keep up the use of that when she has a nappy on but if you can, let her spend as much time as possible without a nappy. When she is wearing a nappy, change it as often as you can to avoid anything being in contact with her skin for too long. If she is unwell, eating something which is upsetting her tummy or not drinking enough, this could be causing extra strong urine or nasty poop which is making it worse. If it doesn't clear up then your only option will be to see a doctor.

My little girl got terrible nappy rash at a similar age, but it was down to teething. Sometimes when they teeth it can cause rash, because apparantly as they get older, they produce a bit more acid!! I am sure when you were given the antibiotics, your doctor took into consideration your baby! I wouldn't worry too much! I found bathing my daughter in a bath that I had added four redbush tea bags to helped almost immediate relief. You can get these tea bags at most super markets or health shops! You could even soak the bag and apply it to the affected area .. it definately works. Hope it clears up soon.

Yes, it is possible that the antibiotics have passed through to your daughter's gut. Antibiotics dont just kill infections; they also kill off the natural flora in the gut, allowing things like thrush to develop. It's possible your baby has thrush on her bottom.
there are many ways to treat thrush without recourse to drugs.
keep the nappy off as much as possible; if she can bear it, try to give her some natural yogurt by mouth; if not, spread some on her bottom(yes!) and let it dry in the air.
Your local pharmacist should be able to help with a powder to help with that rash too.

Yes, this is quite possible. She may now have a yeast infection from the antibiotics. It is best to take her to the doctor to be sure. In the meantime if her bottom has open areas you can take some liquid antacid such as Maalox or Mylanta, paint her bottom with it and let it dry or blow dry it. Then put your normal diaper cream on. This will neutralize any acids in the stool and urine and it won't keep irritating her skin. Good luck!

I agree with all the answers that include antibiotics going through your milk, and that suggest you try ointments, plain water washes, etc. Add to that - feeding your daughter (and yourself) yogurt, which helps rebuild the healthy flora and fauna. It needs to be the real thing, not the kind that's full of gelatin. Do this until well past completion of the prescription (and diaper rash).

Yes it is. Make sure you eat yogurt or take acidophiles caps about 2 hrs after you take your anti. Give your baby some too, will help with the rash. she may be producing too much yeast or just a plain anti rash. Buy a diaper rash cream that has boric acid in it like "Dr. Smiths Diaper Rash Cream" You can buy it at Walmart, Randalls and pharmacies.

yes, your daughter is getting the results of your antibiotics. Use lots of diaper creme!! Try to let it air out as much as possible also. If it gets really bad you can use a combination of maylox (antacid liquid taken for heartburn) and desitin(diaper rash cream). My pediatric nurse told me about this homemade stuff and it really works on the bad rashes

Your baby probably has a yeast infection on her bum from the antibiotics. Everytime I used antibiotics while breastfeeding my children had the same problem. Also whenever my kids take antibiotics themselves they get diaper rash. The doctor will usually give nystatin cream for their rash.

May be just a possibilty.
nappy rash is common for little ones.
let her have some fresh air for a while.leave her without nappy for time to time.
no need to worry.
