I'd like to be a fly on the wall in the White House in 1945 when Harry S. Truman was tormented with the option of dropping the A-bomb on Japan. On one hand, if he went through with it, he could bring the war to a close and save perhaps 100,000 American soldiers and God knows how many Japanese soldiers. But on the other hand, if he decided against it, the US invasion of Japan was inevitable and the suffering and destruction would be incalculable; the war could drag on and on. I've always believed his decision, no matter which way he went, would be a dreadful burden the rest of his life.
