I think it starts with the parents. Unfortunately in today's society, most house holds must have both parents working just to put food on the table, so they aren't able to give the kids the same under the microscope upbringing as they were in past generations. Kids come home from school, the parents are still at work and the kids sit in front of the computer or the TV. and watch shows like Jerry Springer and then everyone is surprised by the way they act. The states have made so many cuts to after school programs that used to keep kids out of trouble, that parents don't have many other avenues now to keep their kids productively active in the time between them getting out of school and a parent getting home. There used to be so many school activities, that most kids could find something that interested them to do at the school, whether it was sports, band, reading groups, girl/boy scouts, gymnastics etc.
Also, parents are afraid to discipline their children. They have the misconception that child protective services (CPS) will be called if you look at your child cross-eyed. Most people do not take the time to check into the laws of their state to discover what CPS considers abuse. You can spank your kids (not always the best method!!!) but you can not beat them. If your spanking leaves bruises, welts, breaks the skin etc. that’s abuse.

How many people out there of all races, genders and income levels could talk for days about this one!?!
With a combination of the lack of American Values and Morals along with the media obsession society has placed upon us, many of todays youth are effected in both negative and positive ways.
Lack of parenting interest is to blame to some extent, although peer pressure seems to be what is most influencial in today's materialistic frenzy!
We see family sitcoms covering affairs and issues that were once not talked about... Thus making it acceptable.
We idolize women who we would not accept at our family Christams party!
I think todays kids are growing up too fast in a very vulnrable society that is focusing less on education and more on power and greed.
Do we really want our future youth to become the CEO to Enron or the Unibomber?
We as a society have to lock down on the rules again, including Juvinile curfew and really crack down by providing communities oppertunities for all levels of youth, including the poor, but not forgetting the middle class and rich.
In closing, parents and educators need to keep thier eyes open and not be afraid to TALK to your child.
It's actually quite cool to be smart and to have values and morals. It'll make a well rounded adult!

I'll tell you what has caused a lot of problems with our youth,Our Governments, thats what! When you remove all the power that parents and teachers had over children by passing paralysing laws to render both these parties useless at instilling discipline and respect for their elders and other people, and people's lives and property, there is nothing to hinder them from misbehaving, they know they can get away with murder,so,what do you expect?I'm not religious, but im sorry from time to time quotes from the bible cannot be ignored, and one goes thus:'spare the rod and you spoil the child'.I think that was in the book of proverbs.Well, this rings very true.I am a living example of a child that always had to answer to the rod,it has not scarred me ,nor has it blighted my life in any way.I have grown into a responsible adult who has never had any truck with the police,,no one in my family has ever been to jail nor do we get up to dodgy things that could lead to jail. But the way the kids of today carry on,at least 60%of them end up with a criminal record by the time they are twenty -thirty.So blame the government.

You can't blame everything on the youth, society, or even lack of faith. The current problems don't just come out of nothing, they have to come from something--mainly the older generations. By being too lenient and creating a bad example, kids think they can do the same things at such a young age; they don't understand that it's extremely unhealthy as well as dangerous to drink and smoke at a young age because they think if their parents can do it, why can't they? Same thing with sex and violence. Just because it's in the movies doesn't mean your kids have to be exposed to it. Create ground rules, enforce them, and your kids will grow up how you want them to.

I do not know the answer to this problem, but I strongly believe that people are giving up on everything. If your spouse is not exactly the same as they were the day you met then the answer is to divorse them. If you are having money problems in the family then pack your **** and leave, those kids don't need you anyhow. If you had a bad job then what is the sense of working again welfare will take care of you. Women are just as much to blame for the problems in this world as men, however if you go into a correctional facility and ask them what was the most painful thing that they ever have felt I can assure you the majority of them would respond, MY DAD NOT BEING THERE FOR ME. Whether he took off or abused them or just didn't have the time for them. The rest would say the same but about their mother. I PRAY THAT PARENTS WILL START BEING MORE RESPONSIBLE AND REALIZE THAT OUR KIDS ARE THE KEY TO OUR FUTURE. If we don't take care of them, they will not take care of us. It scares me to death to think of what things are going to be like 50 years from now if we don't do something about this.

I'll tell you whats caused the current problem with our youth.
First of all, we are taking God out of EVERYTHING. This nation was founded on faith in God. Now we're doing everything possible to turn away from Him. Is it any wonder that America is suffering so horribly? We're taking God out of the equation which makes it not equal and makes it not solvable.
Secondly, kids scream abuse when they're spanked once. So parents are afraid to discipline. The Bible says, spare the rod, spoil the child. Oh, boy are we sparing the rod. There is a difference between discipline and abuse. The thing is, parents are afraid to do a single thing because we've given children the power to dictate what correction they receive.
I was abused as a child, tied up and beaten by my mom's boyfriend, I know the difference. We need to eliminate the fear of just discipline by educating EVERYONE on the differences between discipline and abuse.
But, primarily, the cause is lack of God in our lives.

Irresponsible people having babies and then not wanting to take responsibility of the child. It is not the childs fault, but lies squarely on the parent or parents. If you bring a child into this world then take ownership of the child, discipline them by teaching them right from wrong, and set the example for them. Kids will mimic their parents. So if you act like a jack-*** chances are your children will too.

Lack of parental supervision/control in in large part due to liberal interference limiting parents control and authority. The government has built a huge mechanism which employs hundreds of thousands to take children from their parents, who they claim are abusive or neglectful, and then put the children into the machine. This machine however, fails miserably in its attempts to ''save'' children, mainly because they run into the same issues the ''abusive'' or ''negligent'' parents did in the fist place! Of course at this point the chlid can be ''labeled'' and sent into another huge taxpayer funded machine... and so on and so forth...

Those parents that allow their children to do whatever they want whenever they want. Whatever their chidren want, they get with no questions asked. Those children have no rules to follow and no concequences for things that they have done.
We can't blame it on society 100% since the parents are the onces raising the kids. Yes society is telling parents what they can and can't do to raise their children which is making it harder to raise them but it still is on the hands of the parents for teaching them what they need to grow up responsible adults.

Wow, that's a huge question. I think we've become a fairly selfish society, and we are not being very good role models for our young people. Why should they care about making the world a better place or taking care of each other, when they see us disrespecting each other, other cultures, and living without values?
