To mark their territory. In the wild, animals can be seen doing this. Whenever interlopers encroach in this demarcated area, fur often flies. The reason it stinks is obvious. The more intense the scent, the stronger is the message: Stay out! Also, some of these odors, though repulsive to humans and other animals, have attractive qualities to female members of the same species. That's the way it is in the real world. What's one animal's trash is another's treasure.

I was told by a vet I think that it's the male hormone, testosterone, that makes their urine stink. Neutered males to not have the strong smelling urine that un-neutered ones do because neutering is removing the testes and without testes, a male doesn't produce testosterone. I have two neutered male cats and they do not have smelly urine.

And by the way... some female animals do spray and mark their territory to let the males know they are there. A male can tell if a female is in season by the smell of her urine.

Since animals don't speak, it's their way of saying "this is my territory". Females don't do it becase they aren't the ones competing for mates.
