There are two ways to look at the first problem. The quickest way to find the answer is to take the amount of the decrease, $250, and divide it by the total amount, $1200.
Therefore, 250/1200 = 20.8 % decrease.

Another way to look at the would be to subtract the $250 from the $1200 to get the remaining balance, $950. Then, divide the remaining balance by the original balance, 950/1200 = 79.2%. Originally, $1200 was 100% of the balance, now, $950 is only 79.2% of the balance. Therefore, the decrease would be 100% - 79.2% , or 20.8%

On the second one, you simply have to multiply $2,560 by 18% to get the amount deposited. 18% is equal to 18/100, or in decimal form 0.18.
Therefore, 2560 *0.18 = $460.80.

Now, for practice, look at the remaining amount, the $2560 - 460.80 = $2,099.20. This is the amount she didn't deposit. Find out the percentage that this represents.
Take $2,099.20/2560 = 0.82 or 82%.
We know that is right because she deposited 18% and is left with 82%. If you add the 18% and the 82%, you get back to the original 100%.

Good Luck

The key to word problems is to simplify the language until you find your equation.

#1) The "decrease in balance" is the $250. To find the "percent of decrease," divide the amount of the decrease by the amount of the balance:

percent of decrease = $250 divided by 1200.

#2) This simply means, "what is 18% of $2,560. "

To find that, multiply .18 (decimal point 18 which is what 18% means) times $2,560.

The percent of decrease is (250/1200)*100 = 20.833333%

Check: 20.833333% of 1200 = .2083333(1200) = =249.9999

18% of 2560 = .18*2560 = $460.8
She deposited $460 and 80 cents.

the decrease is $250.

1200/100 * x= 250
(1200/100 * x)/(1200/100)= 250/(1200/100)
X= 20.8333333333
X= 20.8

2. (2560/100) * 18= 460.8
She deposited $460.80.

1.250/1200=x
x=.208333333
%=21
check
1200*0.21=252
since the percent is rounded, 21% is the answer
2.18%of 2560=0.18*2560
0.18*2560=460
$460 is the answer.
