About the beginning of the iron age. That was when a small ax became practical. Before then, with bronze you needed mass to cut with, so there were few to no hatchets, They just didn't have the required weight to make them worth making.

no clue, maybe in the bronze or copper age for metal ones
the ice man 5K years ago had a copper one
stone ones probably go back like 15K years
maybe 25k for clovis point type axes, the first ones in Europe were not hafted, just hand held, maybe 30 or 40K years ago
