I've installed Vista on 2 laptops - 1 of them is brand new, the other is a couple of years old.
The old laptop was by far the easiest Windows install I've ever done! It installed all the drivers automatically (for absolutely everything). Vista should auto-detect older ATI cards and install a driver for it on first boot, it did this for my X300 card without any problems. Failing this there should be a driver on the ATI website.
The newer laptop I had to install a number of drivers, I have a Geforce 7950 GTX in this one and it was a bit of a nightmare! I tried installing the XP driver and the desktop worked fine at full resolution but 3d applications caused a BSoD (blue screen of death). It took several hours seaching the net to find a suitable Geforce Go driver (as the standard video driver for both nVidia and ATI cards do not work with mobile GPU's) however since finding a driver it works perfectly.
Every other driver I've needed I used the XP version and have had absolutely no problems. As I see it Video cards you need a new Vista driver, everything else you dont.
I can understand why people are sceptical of installing Vista right away, XP was terrible till SP2!!! However I've been using Vista on my main computer since the business release and have had very few problems, the occasional weird moment but a quick reboot fixes that. There are many great improvements over XP and there is no way I would switch back now!

If your laptop is vista compatible on the restore disk of your laptop there should some Vista compatible drivers .For your Graphics Card you can go to ATI's website.
PS:On your Harddrive you should install two partitions, one with vista and another with XP it's much better.

whatever you do,,DO NOT use windows xp driver for windows vista, they will not work and may screw your system up
for your graphic card go to http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vista32/common-vista32.html,and download and install these drivers
with regard to the realtek ac97 audio it should be automatically recognized by windows vista just as it is in windows xp,otherwise go to http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
this is all 100% reliable info as i have installed vista ultimate(beta) build 5600 on 4 machines and had no problems
any more help with vista let me know
good luck

k well.. basically your computer wont be compatable if there isnt a sticker on your laptop or pc.
it says " Designed for windows xp"with the windows logo on top of it
and under it, theres a black background and in white text it says "windows vista capable". if your computer doesnt say that then i would go get a refund for that windows vista that u just bought

According to MS all the drivers "should" be ok however, MS have gotten it wrong before. There is NO WAY I would install vista yet on its own, maybe as a second system, but not on its own...
