If a cell excetes enzymes into the enviorment that cause nutrients to be broken down into easily metabolised form outside the cell.
There would be less material to excrete. Only neccessary nutrients would be ingested. It would save energy.

This is the digestion that takes place outside the cells, mostly in the cavity called as gastrointestinal cavity or simply gut by the activity of hydrolysing enzymes. The digested food is then absorbed by blood and transported to the cells for oxidation. This type of digestion takes place in all chordates/vertebrates, most of the invertebrates. Only a few types of invertebrates like hydra and all the unicellular protozoans like Amoeba have intracellular digestion-----digestion within the cells.
