My friend is worried about his teenaged son. His son has been progressively more withdrawn and wrapped up in a fantasy world of role playing games like Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons, etc. He shows no interest in girls or sports, and his weight has shot up from lack of exercise. He has begun skipping high school classes to stay home in his room...alone. I'm wondering should something be done about this or will he grow out of it? Are "gamers" unpopular at school and subject to ridicule??? Is it possible that he's being bullied for being "uncool"?????

Role playing games, by and in themselves, do not cause social problems. Rather, I have observed just the opposite to be true. It is not at all unusual for people with social problems to enter these fantasy worlds as an escape from their painful realities(especially when the fantasy world gives them a chance to feel important). In your son's case, help is needed. Not because of the games themselves, but because he is starting to skip school (thereby compromising his education). Find a time to talk- and listen to him. Don't blow off what he says to you, and don't be afraid to seek professional help.

This isn't about being a role-playing gamer. It isn't healthy for anyone to spend all of their time doing anything in front of a computer all day.
For some people with physical limitations, it is an excellent way for them to maintain communication and to participate in things, but still, not all day.
Your friend needs to simply limit the amount of time that their son can be on the computer. If the computer is in their son's bedroom, they should consider moving it out into a public area of the house.
People just need to learn to manage their time and balance their lives better than this.

DEVELOPE them? It's the reason they play these games in the first place.
