"Emo" has become a style of music (sub-genre of hard rock), a fashion statement, and an attitude definition. I really seem to get asked this question very often because it seems like many many people need clarification on what exactly this label is, but it is in fact /very/ hard to explain.

Concerning fashion, emos generally are characterized by tight shirts, tight jeans, and often Chuck Taylor Converse shoes. Many guys wear girls' pants. Button-down-the-front shirts and pinstripes are also big. Emos (especially emo boys) are extremely fashionable, look well put together, and are accessorized sensibly.

One thing that really bothers me about how some people explain "emo" is by saying "they're all cutters." Emos are NOT generally cutters. Get it straight -- if you're going to assign cutting and drugs to a label, make it the goths, but no matter what label you're talking about, there are /always/ going to be cutters in that label. Preps cut, for god's sake. There is a HUGE difference between gothic and emo. So please do not assume that emos are cutters and hate life. Emo simply comes from the words 'emotive' and 'emotional,' which is exactly what they are. Not depressed and self-destructive.
