I have written some adult erotic stories. I would like to submit them to certain magazines but am unsure about the process. Someone suggested I mail a copy to myself by certified mail to show proof of ownership of each story. Is this necessary? Any other suggestions?

You should mail a copy of each story to yourself; it's not always necessary, but it is a way to self-copyright.
Pick up a copy of each of the magazines you are thinking of submitting to so you can determine which ones are compatible with your writing style.
Then just send the story with a clear coherent cover letter addressed to the editor in charge of acquisitions. Be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope so the editor can get things back to you.
Good luck. I hope you are successful.

Go to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of Writer's Market. This book gives you listing of publishers, magazines, anyone who could possibly buy your work.
