Stayokay is the former youth hostel, near the Vondelpark.
Hansje Brinker is one of the cheapest in town. Also in the centre, quite popular by backpackers. Kerkstraat. Funny website too.
Try hostelamsterdam for other advice, but these two are good.

Bulldog Hostel - it's actually a 5 star hostel (I didn't even know they existed). It was clean and central.

I stayed at Stayokay by the Vondelpark in November.
Clean, friendly and not far from bar/restaurants/coffeeshops.
It was 16 euro/night.

If you can't get into the Bulldog, Durty Nellies was nice and clean and has a good bar downstairs. Central and very reasonable.
