I just reread your question, you say keep a LIVE tree from getting dry! Here's a link with ALL/FULL care info for a LIVE Christmas tree: http://forestry.about.com/od/christmastrees1/ht/living_x_tree.htm
Important parts are:
1) Gradually introduce tree from outside to inside
locate tree in coolest part of the room & away from heating ducts.
2) Place the tree in a large galvanized tub including root ball -confines water and needles into a more manageable and cleanable space.
3) Water your tree as often as necessary to moisten the roots but not soggy.
4) Leave inside no longer than 7-10 days (some experts suggest only 4 days).
5) Carefully introduce tree back outside

The following answer (my original answer) was for a cut Christmas tree ... looks like all the other answers you got so far are for a cut, not live, tree ... guess we all misread.
For cut tree:
As soon as you get home, cut a thin piece from the bottom of the trunk to open it up again to getting water, water it immediately. However, as soon as it's cut, it does slowly start sealing the cut/wound with sap. You can drill holes up the trunk too, and add fresh H2O daily ... I've heard a couple drops of glycerine in the H2O helps. I've heard soda, but that would attract ants.

When I bought my wreath (provides addtl decor plus the fresh pine scent), I was told to spray it with water daily to keep it green/moist as long as possible.

Looks like the question needed to have the word "live" in caps! Denise, answerer # 5 is the only one who caught it & came back to edit her original answer, good job and good edited answer.

You have to get a tree holder somewhere like the Aderson's or Meijer or Wal-Mart and water it.

By giving it plenty of water ever day and some say by giving it an aspirin a day as well.. But mostly making sure it has plenty of water every day.

on the first day you have it you give it 2 aspirin and just water it daily and make sure it never runs out of water... it will eventually die since its not getting all the nutrients from the ground

A little late to be asking this don't you think? Its time put the decorations away and turn the tree to mulch.

I know this sounds weird but sprite or vodka always works for me.
