How do I use the Speech function on a macbook laptop?

im rying to use the speech function but dont know how. If anyone knows this....i want to do what stewie did on family guy..

try going to the top left apple menu and select system preferences , click on speech at the bottom, you should have all the options for speech recognition.

or for fun you can just open up TextEdit and choose the 'speech' under the edit menu to speak some text you could paste in.
