You need to go into the Control Panel>User Accounts>Account Administrator and change your password to a very strong password.

Simple, easy to remember passwords are easy for "Brute Force" methods to "crack".

A password should be made up of "RANDOM" letter(caps and small), numbers and symbols. The password should be a minimum of 8 characters long. Longer passwords are better. Windows XP will allow Passwords up to 256 characters long. That does make for an unbreakable password, but would be impossible to memorize and a nightmare to type. Also, there are very few websites that allow passwords that long.

I find that passwords in the 15 - 20 character length to be very effective. I use a random password generator program to make a "Base Password" of 14 characters. I then add additional characters to the end of the password for other uses. For instance: For your Computer you could add ADMIM, Yahoo Account = YA, Yahoo Messenger =YIM, PayPal = PP, eBay = eBay, Wal-Mart = W-M etc. Your password to sign on the computer might look like this:

y9_p+bn#G1*qt2ADMIN

The RANDOM base password will be extremely difficult for any "Brute Force" method to "crack" and the additional leters add to the difficulty. This system means you only have to memorize the Base Password. The Suffix characters can be written down, because they will be useless without the base password.

Changing the Base Password regularly is very important. The longer a "Brute Force" method has, the better the chance of "cracking" the password no matter how random. I change my base password every 3 months. This can be a pain, but it is a much less pain than cleaning up an Identity theft mess. I also find that by the time I change the password, at all the sites, I have the base password memorized and don't need to write it down.

Change your password to a more secure password by hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL and selecting "change password". Or go to the "User Accounts" option under control panel and change it there.
